You May Have Seen One of These

1/29/2021 (Permalink)

A healthy sump pump will keep you dry.

Got a basement?

Chances are you may have a sump pump.  And if your basement is big and beautiful enough, you may have two.

A sump pump is your primary protection from outside rainwater intruding into your basement.  Nobody cares about a sump pump when its running just fine, but everybody cares when it fails.

Whether your basement if finished or unfinished, many people use their basement for storage.  And a lot of times, homeowners keep important documents and pictures in storage in a basement.

The best time to check on a sump pump is during a rainy day.  A good idea is to check on it to see how it is performing when rainwater is coming into the sump pit.  Watch for proper operation of the pump and the float.  Listen for sound of the pump motor as is pumps the water out of the pit.  A smooth running sump pump will remove the water out of the pit in a few seconds and perform flawlessly during the storm.  If you notice the pump struggling to keep up, it might be a good time to think of replacement with a more powerful pump.

In case of sump pump failure, give SERVPRO of Lombard/Addison a call for assistance.  We can be onsite and help cleanup in a jiffy.  SERVPRO of Lombard/Addison has trained staff to do it well and do it right.  630-543-1700.

Hurricane Dorian

8/29/2019 (Permalink)

With all the talk about the hurricane heading towards Florida, has it gotten you thinking about what you would do in an emergency? Here are a few items to keep in an emergency kit if the power is out, or if you are stuck in your home for a few days.

  1. Make sure there is one gallon of water per person for at least 3 days. This water will be needed for drinking and sanitation.
  2. Have enough non-perishable food for at least three days and a manual can opener.
  3. A battery powered radio to hear for any updates on the situation.
  4. Flashlight and extra batteries
  5. First aid kit
  6. Whistle to signal for help
  7. Dust mask to filter contaminated air
  8. Plastic sheeting and duct tape to potentially build a shelter
  9. Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  10. Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

You should have a kit in your home, car, and at work. You can never be too prepared for a disaster to happen and may not always be at home when it does. Make sure everyone is aware of where the kits are located so anyone can use them if needed.

Are You Covered?

8/28/2019 (Permalink)

If you were to have a water loss are you covered by your insurance? Typical homeowners insurance may not cover you for all water losses. If water comes through the foundation, through a window, or comes in under the door then a homeowners policy will not cover any damages.  There is an additional policy you can add on which is flood insurance. Many believe you cannot purchase flood insurance if you are not in a flood zone. This is not true. Flood insurance can be purchased through a private broker, and if the property is not in a flood zone, the price of flood insurance is significantly less than you would think! Did you know that 20% of flood claims come from homes that are not deemed “high risk”? Start looking into additional policies to make sure you are covered if you ever have a water loss.

Dangers of Water in Your Home

7/18/2019 (Permalink)

Has it ever rained so much that when you went to check on your sump pump you noticed it was not keeping up, and there was water coming into your home? Having water get into your home is a devastation alone. Recently, there was a home that got enough water to reach up to the electrical paneling. The water caused the electrical box to explode. The entire back of the home was engulfed in flames within seconds. Everyone was able to escape without injury, but they were thinking, “What could we have done to prevent this?”.

If you ever notice there is water in your home, identify the source of the water. If it is coming from a pipe or appliance you can turn off the water in your home. If the water is coming from an outside source you cannot control, such as a flood, you will have to turn off the electricity to your home. The water damage to the home was terrible, but the fire was detrimental.

Document Restoration

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

Most businesses are required to keep important documents for a period. SERVPRO can restore documents that have been damaged from water, fire, or mold. Keep in mind, we are not miracle worker. If the document is damaged beyond recognition before we get it, we cannot bring it back.

SERVPRO can provide transportation to our facility to move your documents. The document restoration team is HIPAA certified for those sensitive medical documents. We are not limited to only paper documents. We have successfully restored books, photos, photo albums, paintings, and more.

The process starts with doing inventory. We want to make sure the documents are in the same order they were sent to us in. Next, we package the documents into bankers boxes and place them in cold storage until we can get them to the facility. Cold storage will prevent any further damage occurring to the documents. Once the documents arrive at the facility, SERVPRO places them in our Vacuum Freeze Drying Chamber where the process can take about 30-60 days to complete depending on how many documents there are.
